Qwen2-VL-7B-Instruct-GermanTrafficSigns-LoRA-Holdout

Introduction

This is Devin Ullerick's JHU Spring 2025 Independent Study project that fine-tuned the Qwen2-VL-7B-Instruct VLM using a dataset of German street images and street signs.

Original Kaggle dataset used for fine-tuning: https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/valentynsichkar/traffic-signs-dataset-in-yolo-format

Fine-tuned dataset image captions were generated using GTP-4o mini. The full set was split between a train set used during fine-tuning and an evaluation set. Train/eval sets were created to balance class representations across the four categories:

  1. prohibitory
  2. danger
  3. mandatory
  4. other

# We recommend enabling flash_attention_2 for better acceleration and memory saving, especially in multi-image and video scenarios.

# The default range for the number of visual tokens per image in the model is 4-16384. You can set min_pixels and max_pixels according to your needs, such as a token count range of 256-1280, to balance speed and memory usage.
